Choose your portrait method

AI headshots vs professional photography: which fits your brief?

Choose AI when you want to create styled portrait options from existing photos and can review the result carefully. Choose a photographer when you need live direction or a photograph of you in a specific setting. Start with the finished picture you need, then compare the complete package.

In brief

Before paying, compare the required scene, preparation, finished files, review and correction terms. AI creates a new image from references; photography captures a session. Judge the portrait against your current appearance and the place where it will be used.

Understand what each method creates

AI headshots use your existing photos as references for a newly generated image. The clothes, background and expression can be combined in a scene that was never photographed. Review the result against your current appearance.

A photographer directs and captures your expression, posture, clothes and light during a session. Retouching can refine the captured frame afterward. Ask what the session and editing include; photography also requires a clear brief and a careful final selection.

Photographer-led sessions can take place in person or with remote direction. ProfileIn creates AI portraits from uploaded photos. If live capture and posing guidance are part of your brief, compare a photographer-led service instead.

Choose by the picture you need

These are practical decision criteria, not a quality ranking. The right choice depends on the scene, the level of direction you want and the file you need to publish.

Your requirementWhat to consider
A new profile portrait without arranging a sessionAI can create options from clear references; inspect the likeness and final crop
Help with expression and posingA photographer can give feedback while the picture is being taken
Your actual workplace, clothing or equipment in the imagePlan a photographed session so those details are captured
A current photo that already worksYou may only need a suitable crop or an updated file
A consistent team pageCompare the shared brief, backgrounds, per-person review and delivered crop
A particular print size or publication specificationCheck the required pixels, crop and file format with the recipient before ordering

Compare likeness and finish at full size

Place a candidate beside a recent, unfiltered photo. Check face shape, age, hairline, eyes, glasses and facial hair. The picture should be recognizable to people who meet you.

Then inspect skin texture, teeth, ears, clothing edges and the transition into the background. Review the agreed retouching in a photograph as well. Finally, reduce the image to its intended display size; a good full portrait can still need a different profile crop.

  • Likeness: does the face match your current appearance?
  • Texture: does skin retain natural detail and variation?
  • Facial details: are eyes, teeth, glasses and edges credible?
  • Crop: are the face and expression readable where the image will appear?

Compare complete packages, not image counts alone

Ask how many finished files you receive, which looks they cover and what happens if a result needs work. A large gallery gives you more options to inspect; it does not tell you how many portraits you will choose to use.

Compare the total cost for your brief. Include any additional editing or files you need, and read the actual correction and cancellation terms. Do not assume that a photographer's session, an AI image pack and a reviewed set include the same work.

Ask before orderingWhy it affects the decision
What references or session preparation are required?Preparation takes time with either method
When does delivery timing start?A generation estimate or session date may exclude review and editing
Which dimensions, crops and formats are included?A profile square and a wider website portrait serve different placements
What can be corrected, and by what deadline? The available next step matters if the first selection needs attention
What do the usage and photo-processing terms say?Check the specific provider's published terms for your intended use

What the ProfileIn AI package includes

Profile Portrait is $35 once for four AI portraits from eight selfies. Team Portraits uses the same eight-selfie, four-portrait format for 5–249 people. Company Rollout uses four selfies for two portraits per person for orders of 250–5,000 people.

Choose one of six backgrounds for each final portrait; backgrounds can repeat. Every delivered image follows a human review for likeness, natural texture, facial details and crop. You still choose the portrait that represents you before publishing it.

One correction request by reply email can cover up to two portraits within seven days of first delivery, with another human review of corrected images. The 30-minute individual delivery target starts after our team confirms suitable references and timing after payment; it includes human review. Agree on timing with us when planning for a deadline.

ProfileIn sends full-size JPG portraits and 1024 × 1024 square JPG crops by ordinary email. Save the files and check your destination's requirements before choosing which version to use.

Write a short brief before choosing

List the places the portrait will appear, the current look you want represented, and any exact file or scene requirements. Decide whether you want live feedback while the image is captured or prefer to review generated options afterward.

If AI fits that brief, start with clear references and review the finished portrait before publishing. If you need direction, a real location or precise capture decisions, discuss those needs with a photographer.

AI headshots or photography: common questions

Is an AI headshot a professional photograph?

It is a generated portrait based on reference photos, rather than a frame captured during your session. A professional photographer captures you and can direct the light, expression and posture while shooting.

Are AI headshots always cheaper or faster?

Compare the current packages and the complete work you need. Inputs, review, editing, file choices and correction terms differ. ProfileIn's individual plan is $35 once; its 30-minute delivery target starts after our team confirms suitable references and timing after payment.

When should I choose a photographer?

Consider a photographer when you want live expression and posing guidance, need your actual setting or clothing captured, or have a precise photographic brief. Agree on retouching, files and delivery before booking.

How do I decide whether an AI result is usable?

Compare it with current photos for likeness, inspect natural texture and facial details, then test the crop at the size where it will appear. Choose another image or request a correction if a recognizable feature has changed.
