Your selfie reference guide

Selfies for AI headshots: what to upload and what to replace.

Choose recent, sharp photos of yourself with visible eyes and beauty filters off. This checklist helps you build a useful reference set, replace weak photos and check the files before uploading.

In brief

Profile Portrait and Team Portraits need 8 distinct selfies; Company Rollout needs 4. Individual uploads use JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 12 MB each, at least 400 × 400 pixels; the form prepares JPEG copies up to 1 MB each. Team and company photo handoffs are arranged by email. Check face clarity, current appearance and varied views.

Choose the reference count for your package

The photo count is a ProfileIn package requirement. Other AI services use different counts, so follow the instructions for the order you are preparing.

Build an eight-photo reference set

Start with two front-facing photos: one relaxed and one with a natural smile. Add one gentle left turn and one gentle right turn. Finish with four more clear photos showing small changes in angle, expression or soft light.

Eight files should show eight useful views. Cropping or copying one photo does not add a new reference. Camera-roll photos can work if they show your current appearance clearly.

SelectWhat it should show
2 front-facing photosYour eyes, face shape and a relaxed or smiling expression
2 gentle turnsOne left and one right, with both eyes still readable
4 additional photosDifferent clear views or expressions without extreme angles

Use four references for Company Rollout

For Company Rollout, choose two front-facing photos and a gentle turn to each side. Keep your current hairstyle, glasses and facial hair consistent across all four.

This package delivers two portraits per participant. The lighting, focus and visibility checks below apply to both reference-set sizes.

Take clear photos with a phone

Face a window or another broad, soft light source. If a bright window is behind you or direct sun makes you squint, change position until your whole face is easy to see.

Hold the camera near eye level and leave room around your head and shoulders. Tap to focus on your face, hold still, and inspect the original photo. If your face is stretched by a very close camera or partly hidden by the frame, take another.

  • Keep both eyes visible; move away from reflections on glasses.
  • Use a relaxed expression you recognize as your own.
  • Turn off beauty mode, face reshaping and heavy smoothing.
  • Choose solo photos with your current appearance.

Replace weak references before uploading

Review the selected originals at full size. A file can meet the pixel limit while still containing a tiny, blurred or filtered face. Choose another photo when the detail you need is missing.

Replace thisUse this instead
A burst of nearly identical framesDistinct angles or natural expressions
Deep shadows, strong backlight or a color castA face that is readable in even light
Sunglasses, hidden eyes or heavy filtersVisible features and unfiltered detail
An old hairstyle or different facial hairA consistent view of how you look now

Check the file requirements

Prepare eight distinct selfies for Profile Portrait or Team Portraits, or four for Company Rollout. Individual online uploads accept JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 12 MB each, at least 400 pixels wide and 400 pixels high. The form prepares JPEG copies up to 1 MB each. Arrange the team or company photo handoff with us by email.

An unsupported format, an oversized file or an image below the minimum dimensions needs replacing. Making a blurry photo larger will not recover missing facial detail. If your phone uses another format, export a supported copy and check the result before uploading.

Keep references and finished backgrounds separate

Choose reference photos for a clear view of your face. Their backgrounds do not have to match your final portraits. For each finished image, choose one of six backgrounds; you can repeat a setting across the set.

After delivery, compare the portrait with these same references. ProfileIn's review criteria are likeness, natural texture, facial details and crop. Clear inputs support that check; they do not establish a guaranteed result.

Selfie upload questions

How many selfies should I upload for AI headshots?

For ProfileIn, use exactly eight distinct selfies for Profile Portrait or Team Portraits, or four for Company Rollout. Counts vary by service; these are ProfileIn's package requirements.

Can I use existing photos instead of taking new selfies?

Yes, if they are clear solo photos that show your current appearance. Choose original, unfiltered images and replace older photos that no longer match your hair, glasses or facial hair.

Can I wear glasses in the references?

If you want your headshot to show the glasses you normally wear, include clear references with them. Keep your eyes visible and replace photos with reflections that obscure them.

What file types and sizes does ProfileIn accept?

The individual upload form accepts JPG, PNG or WebP inputs up to 12 MB each, at least 400 × 400 pixels, and prepares JPEG copies up to 1 MB each for email submission. For team or company orders, agree on the photo handoff with our team by email. Check facial clarity as well as dimensions; a large file can still be blurry.

Do the reference backgrounds need to match the final portraits?

No. Select references for facial clarity. Choose one of six backgrounds separately for each final portrait, with repetition allowed.
